SANTIAGO to TEMUCO 🇨🇱 🏙️ ✈️ 🌋

I ended my last post on the bus to the airport in Santiago. I arrived in plenty of time and worked on my last post while waiting for them to post which gate my flight would be using.


There were a lot of soccer teams at the airport!


Where to buy lunch in the Santiago airport?


I settled on this place. At least the name was in Spanish!

(Although I'm not sure what the name means - Birria means either garbage or a Mexican meat stew)


This is what I bought: Chicken Caesar salad, yogurt & granola parfait, and bubbly mineral water

Here’s another one (center right) ⇨ There are at least 5 volcanoes near Temuco.
This one might be Villarrica, which we saw later up close while driving (photos follow)


Descending into Temuco, about 1.5 hours south of Santiago by air & safely landed


I am visiting our Anglican missionary friends Russ & Heidi Smith in Temuco. They came to Chile as missionaries in 1986 (we came in 1989). We met them at the Miami airport in 1990 when our 3-year-old Joy started playing with their 3-year-old Joel while we were standing in line together, and Heidi asked if we were missionaries, because "No one else would be crazy enough to travel with 3-year-old children!" (Incidentally, Joy's 37th birthday was April 20!) We have maintained a friendship since then, and we are the godparents of their daughter Joyanne. 

She and her husband Pedro live in Temuco also.

Unfortunately, wearing that obligatory swim cap and not wearing my glasses (so straining my vision) for several hours gave me a headache, and I couldn’t find my pain medication until I emptied my locker to shower. My headache had progressed by then, and I had not brought my migraine and nausea medicine with me. So on this lovely drive home (after taking the pictures above), I ended up vomiting, and I went to bed as soon as we got back to the house.

    "Entre Birras" (no i in that) means "Between Beers" (I had to Google Birra as I hadn't heard the term either, at least not in Spanish, though I did know it meant beer in Italian!)

    Sorry to hear about the headache and vomiting. :( Hope you're feeling better now. That hot springs place looks lovely! Glad you got to see Russ & Heidi.

    Tammy I’m so enjoying seeing your wonderful adventure as it unfolds! How licvely to be with Goddaughters family! Grab some riboflavin B2 for the headaches and eye strain - either slow release or take 50-100 mg 4x a day.

As I wrap up this trip blog, I want to revisit my goals for the trip and reflect on each of them. I have written my reflections below each goal in purple type. My intentions for this trip were: 1. To serve with the CSUS Surf & Serve team at Youth With A Mission YWAM Pichilemu in Chile, doing construction work; to build relationships with fellow team members. My time in Chile seems sooo long ago! The Mission Trip was awesome, and I grew so close to the other team members that I cried when they left! WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY

¡Hola! 🦋 Wednesday, April 10 After the morning routine of dance exercise class, breakfast, and devotionals, I tried to help set the new swimming pool men’s locker room water heater thermostat. I didn’t succeed, but my teammate Kevin found a YouTube video in Spanish to guide the staff in setting it. After that, I painted the kitchen some more, and removed signs from the entryway walls so Mikayla could paint without obstruction. It’s not easy being green! (Trying to go from blue to yellow 🫠) The Pura Vida pool (I got to peek at the pool every time I took a bathroom break because the bathrooms in the gym are not completed yet.) BACK TO SANTIAGO FROM TEMUCO & OFF TO AUKLAND, NEW ZEALAND 🇨🇱 🌋 ✈️ 🏙️ ✈️

¡Hola! 🦋  Sunday, April 21 I woke up feeling fine. Thank you, Jesus!  Russ & Heidi and I went to have breakfast at the house of their daughter Joyanne and her husband Pedro. Joyanne is my goddaughter. On the way, I got to see a little more of Temuco. An interesting bridge A glimpse of the city from a high road Pedro's family is Mapuche, and they live on beautiful, pastoral Mapuche land in the country.  Joyanne and Pedro built a beautiful, modern house next to his parents on their property.  She is especially proud of her American-style kitchen.  Joyanne & Pedro have a sweet dog, Bobby,  that they rescued from a garbage enclosure as a puppy It was good to catch up with Joyanne, as I haven’t seen her in a long time, and this is the first time I've met Pedro.
